Pup-Grass® FAQ

Below are Frequently asked questions we have Received over time from our customers

Other companies sell artificial dog grass.  What make your company better?

Pup-Grass® is the original artificial grass engineered in 2005 specifically for dogs.  It is not a copy cat of anyone else’s design.  It is not a  re-branded version of typical landscape turf.  Competing products simply relabeled standard synthetic lawn material.  You can tell the difference instantly: if the backing looks rubbery with holes punched every few inches, it is not true dog turf.  It is regular landscape turf designed to drain when it rains.

What Is The Difference Between Regular Artificial Grass And Pup-Grass?

PupGear Pet Products designed Pup-Grass® to solve dog-specific problems — drainage, cleaning, odor control, and safety.  Our proprietary backing drains up to 195 gallons per hour, keeping the surface dry and odor-free.  We tested multiple yarn densities and blade heights to make cleanup easier and improve turf recovery after play.

Are there different styles and colors of Pup-Grass®

No.  Pup-Grass® is manufactured in one specific style, height, and density.  That is intentional — to ensure the turf drains efficiently and performs consistently in all weather conditions.  Any variation in blade height or density can slow drainage or trap odors, so we maintain a strict standard to guarantee the same pet-safe, clean, and durable surface in every roll.

I’ve seen other synthetic grasses that look like Pup-Grass®.  What is the difference?

They are copycats and knock-offs.  Some may look similar but lack Pup-Grass’s proprietary drainage system, antimicrobial fibers, and long-term durability.

Is Pup-Grass® safe for dogs, kids, and the environment?

Yes.  Pup-Grass® is made from non-toxic, lead-free materials certified free of     heavy metals.  It is certified free of It’s safe for pets, children, and the planet.

Do you offer installation?

We Offer project management service. We always want to be a pet product innovator first, not a landscape contractor.  However, we work with experienced installation specialists nationwide.  Our Project Manager Service connects you with a qualified, insured installer in your area — and we manage your Pup-Grass® installation down to the last detail.  We verify licenses and insurance, specify the correct base materials, talk to previous customers, and we will even negotiate prices if we think the estimate is too high.

I am planning to do the installation myself. How do I know how much base material I need?

Contact a local landscape-supply company that sells sand and gravel.  Give them your square footage and how many inches of soil you’ll remove — they can calculate the exact cubic feet you will need.  If your soil is heavy clay, plan to remove a bit more to prevent expansion or heaving.

How many spikes or nails do I need?

Plan on about 25 six-inch spikes per 100 square feet.

Can I install Pup-Grass® on concrete or a patio?

Yes.  For hard surfaces, use Pup-Drain™, which creates airflow and drainage between the concrete and the turf.  It also protects the turf backing from abrasion.  You will need to nail or glue the edges down.

Can I put Pup-Grass® over existing grass?

No.  For best results, remove the old lawn and install over a compacted base according to our Installation Guide.

Infill
What is infill?

Infill is a loose material (like sand or rubber) brushed into artificial grass to keep fibers upright and provide cushioning.  Many installers use crushed rubber or silica sand — but those are toxic to dogs.

What infill do you recommend?

We only recommend Pup-Fresh™ Zeolite Infill — a 100% natural mineral that reduces odors by about 80% and recharges in sunlight.  It’s safe, non-toxic, and designed for dog turf.

Costs & Sizing
How can I get a price for Pup-Grass®?

Use the Custom Cost Calculator on our Products page to estimate your total.  You’ll see pricing based on roll length and square footage.

What does installation typically cost?

Labor costs vary by region, and the extents of the work required but expect $8.00–$17.00 per square foot (including labor and materials).

Do you sell custom sizes?

Yes, by length only.  Rolls are 15 feet wide with a 10-foot minimum cut.

I need a 9′×26′ piece.  What size should I order?

Because rolls are 15′ wide, you would need to order a 15′×26′ roll (390 sq ft).  You could order smaller and seam two pieces, but seams are more visible and require extra work.

Won’t that create waste?

Some,  but leftovers make great portable potty mats for patios, RVs, or donation to shelters.  You can also sell the remnants on Craig’s List and  Face Book

        Does Artificial Grass Get Hot?

Yes most artificial grass will get hot in direct sunlight, but Pup-Grass® runs cooler than many other synthetic turf,  thanks to its open-flow drainage backing.  Even so, plastic fibers can reach 150°F in full sun.

Use a misting system, shade sail, or keep your sprinkler system active for quick cooling and rinsing.
